Quality of Life

Four distinct seasons – mountainous landscape with valleys and swirling rivers – heart of American history and Appalachian culture – outdoor paradise – wealth of cultural activities such as symphony orchestra, ballet, and theater – delicious American cuisine – the finest American resorts and spas

Low costs of living – low property taxes – high rate of home ownership – state of the art medical facilities – one of the nation’s lowest crime rates – one of the highest ranked American public school systems

West Virginia’s quality of life is outstanding.

Life in West Virginia is community-based, and the citizens have a strong sense of duty to each other. West Virginia offers opportunities and advantages for those who prefer both urban and rural environments.

The security and lower crime rates in West Virginia also translate into lower insurance premiums for residences and businesses because of the reduced incidence of property loss. A particular advantage for many of the businesses involved is the ability to recruit and retain workers for night shifts, as employees have little fear of late hours and employers are spared the cost of elaborate security measures.

Climate
The climate is comparable to Central Europe with four distinct seasons and no natural disasters. In the low-lying areas and valleys, including the western regions of the state and the Eastern Panhandle, winters are mild and summers are warm but pleasant. In the central portions of the state and the more mountainous areas, including the Potomac Highlands, winters are colder, with a greater chance of snow, and summers are mild.

Highest Point
Spruce Knob in the Potomac Highlands, at 4,861 feet (1,481 meters).

Recreation
Whether you enjoy a nice scenic walk on Sunday or a weekend full of extreme sports, West Virginia has a wealth of opportunities.

Mountain Biking/Hiking
Much of the state's natural beauty is preserved in state parks, state and national forests, wilderness areas and preserves. Many of these areas offer extensive hiking trail systems, including a number of old railroad beds that have been converted to mountain biking, equestrian and/or walking trails.

Golfing
For the serious or recreational golfer, public, private and semi-private golf courses abound throughout the state, with courses frequented by the PGA tour. As an example, the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia is world-renowned and has been home to the Ryder-Cup, the championship tournament between Europe and the US.

Skiing
Thanks to the state’s lofty elevation, West Virginia offers the best skiing and longest season in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Whitewater Rafting
West Virginia, undisputed whitewater capital of the East, offers nearly 2,000 miles of mountain streams hard to match for beauty, challenge and history.
